Fruit Hookah: How To Make a Fruit Hookah Bowl

Everyone loves the various multitude of shisha tobacco flavors to smoke for your hookah session.

The most popular flavors for hookah tend to be the delicious fruit flavors like raspberry, apple, orange, mango, and others.

With all of these delicious fruit flavors appearing near the top of the list of the best hookah flavors year in and year out, you may be wondering if there is any way to get an even more intense fruit flavor out of your hookah.

Well, wonder no more — MOB Hookah is here to teach you a little secret that can take your hookah smoking to a whole new level: fruit bowls.

And no, we do not mean a bowl of fruit, we mean a hookah bowl made from a delicious, ripe fruit. (Yes, it is as outrageously delicious as it sounds).

Here is your guide on how to make a fruit hookah bowl.

Why a Fruit Bowl?

Before we get into the details of making your fruit hookah bowl, we feel that you should understand why a fruit hookah bowl can be so wonderful.

First things first, the first shisha ever made was flavored with real fruit juices and even sometimes pieces of fruit. Still to this day, many higher-end shishas are made using real fruit juices to flavor the tobacco.

So, it only makes sense that smoking from a real piece of fruit can add extra fruity flavors to your shisha smoke by including more real fruit juice. But what's more is that smoking from the fruit heats it up as well, which can help it release its natural oils, which only further improves and intensifies the flavor.

In this way, fruit bowls can be very compelling choices for the ultimate shisha flavor.

What Fruits Can You Make a Fruit Bowl From?

A great question — after all, you don’t want to look like a freak trying to make a mini fruit bowl for your hookah out of a kiwi.

But the good news is there are no hard and fast rules. The only thing that limits what fruit you can use is how big of a piece of fruit you can find.

The most common fruit head hookah bowls that you will find will be made of apples, oranges, grapefruits, pineapples, watermelons, and even lemons and limes.

These fruits tend to be the proper size to make a decent-sized hookah bowl that will fit on your hookah without being too large or too small. They are also the best flavor enhancers out there, fruit-wise.

What Tools Do I Need To Make a Fruit Bowl?

Now that we know what we can use to make a fruit bowl out of, we should start getting into making our fruit bowls so we can get to smoking.

First things first: the equipment necessary. To make a fruit bowl successfully, you will need…

  • A kitchen knife
  • A coring tool
  • Napkins or paper towels
  • Toothpicks
  • Aluminum foil

And that’s it! It’s best to make a fruit bowl in a space where it's okay to make a little bit of a mess. You should make sure that you lay down some towels, paper towels, or napkins for you to work on top of. A cutting board is okay, too, but the juices may still run off onto your counter depending on which fruit you choose.

How Do I Make a Fruit Bowl For My Hookah?

Now, on to the main event: how you make a fruit bowl for your hookah. It doesn’t have to be overly complicated, just stay calm and follow these instructions. An alluring part of all of this is that it doesn’t have to be perfect for it to work.

Cutting Your Fruit

The first step is cutting your fruit open to make a bowl.

The best practice here is to cut off about one-third of the fruit from the top. Don’t cut off too much — you want to maintain enough size for your bowl.

When working with an orange or other citrus fruit, you should cut it such that you cut off one of the ends, to ensure that you are cutting it the “right way.” With a pineapple or apple, or other fruit with one stem, cut off the third with the stem to get the right shape.

Coring Your Fruit

The next step is to core the fruit for your bowl. You can do this by using a coring tool that is made specifically for coring fruits and veggies. You can also use a small paring knife to perform this cut, although it is just a bit more difficult.

Just make sure to cut out one uniform hole through the fruit center and go all the way through. We are cutting the hole where the bowl will attach to your stem so make sure that you are making the hole only as large as the bowl grommet so that you can still get a solid seal.

Remove the Flesh

The next step is to remove the flesh from your fruit. You need room in there for your shisha, so get a lot of that flesh out of there. You can leave a small layer around the walls so long as you have enough room for your shisha.

You should also make sure to pat the walls of your bowl dry — it is important it is not wet and dripping so you don’t drip into your hookah, which will just require more cleanup for you.

Making Your Holes

Now you may be thinking something here: won't all of my shisha just fall right down the stem and into my vase?

And yes, you are right, it would fall right through your hookah if you don’t follow this next step. What you have to do next is put toothpicks through the bottom of your fruit to make a checkerboard pattern with very small holes.

Or, if you want to go expert mode and you have a steel sponge hanging around, you can cut a ball of steel sponge and tuck it in the hole in your fruit to hold the shisha in that way.

Prepping Your Bowl

And after that final step, you are back to the typical packing procedure for any hookah bowl.

Sprinkle your loose shisha into your bowl so that it does not pack too tight.

Then wrap your bowl tightly in tin foil, poke a ton of holes in the top (spiral pattern is our personal fave), and then boom, your bowl is ready for your hookah.

Fruit Hookah: The Takeaways

Using a fruit bowl instead of traditional clay or phunnel/vortex bowl on your hookah can be a wonderful special treat that gives your hookah a cool and luxurious look, and adds extra, natural fruit flavor to your shisha.

You can make a fruit bowl out of just about any fruit, but it is best to use one that is big enough to use for a proper amount of shisha, and not so big that you are overwhelming your hookah.

The most popular choices are orange, apple, pineapple, and grapefruit.

Simply cut off the top third of your fruit, core it, remove the flesh, and patch the bottom to prevent all your shisha from falling through, and you are ready to go.

If you want to go the extra mile, use a piece of steel sponge to block your shisha from falling into your hookah.

There are few hookah smoking experiences as unique and fun as using a fruit head hookah bowl for your smoke session. Give it a try and you won’t be disappointed.
